Each test covers a different group of contaminants, and no single panel covers them all. Mercury is the most common reason states advise limits on eating freshwater fish; PFOS is the fastest-growing reason; pesticide residues matter where farmland, orchards, or turf operations drain into the lake. Ordering all three answers the question as fully as these panels allow, from one sampling effort.

You can run all three on portions of the same fish, or on three different fish, as long as you record species, length, weight, catch location, and catch date for each sample. Both are legitimate; they answer slightly different questions.

Fish consumption advice is issued by state health and natural resource agencies, which set advice by species, by size, and by who is eating, and their advisory for your lake stands regardless of what a single fillet shows.
